Sustainability & ESD

"Green" design; efficient design

Historically, buildings have not been designed with sustainability in mind, leaving a legacy of poorly insulated, low-quality living and working environments.

Babbage believes buildings should provide interior environments that contribute to physical and mental health, and enhance creativity and productivity. They should be designed to be flexible and adaptable to future uses. Our aim is to apply these ideals at a practical level and operate a commercially responsible office.

On each project we embed sustainability through good design and enhance the performance of buildings over their life span. It is important to us to deliver the best possible sustainable outcomes for the needs of our clients on every project we are involved with. Whenever possible we specfy materials of low embodied energy and seek to minimise negative impacts on the environment.

We consider that in order to successfully deliver a truly sustainable outcome, sustainable design (ESD) principles need to be integrated into the design from the outset, particularly when a specific benchmark is to be achieved.

Our in-house accredited Building Biologist and Green Star professional, Ingo Ratsdorf, helps ensure that Babbage implements best practice through use of the most suitable materials and methodologies, based on the latest international research and product availability. Babbage staff regularly attend and present at New Zealand and international sustainability conferences. Babbage is also a member of the Green Building Council.
