Geotechnical engineering is an area of sharp focus in New Zealand building and engineering circles. What lies beneath the ground can have a profound impact on any engineering project and on the life of the building itself.

Our team of chartered engineers and engineering geologists draws on wide-ranging experience across the entire geotechnical discipline under the leadership of Malcolm Stapleton, a chartered geo-environmental engineer whose skills have ensured significant projects can proceed on seemingly difficult sites.

Our geotechnical team have experience working throughout the New Zealand landscape and have the ability to work across an entire project, from geotechnical investigations and feasibility studies through to construction and ongoing monitoring.

The geotechnical team can work closely with the other Babbage disciplines to offer a full suite of services to clients, or with a client’s existing suppliers to ensure the best outcomes.

Malcolm is responsible for providing specialist advice and design and for management of Babbage’s team of geotechnical and environmental engineers, engineering geologists and technicians. This includes overview of Babbage’s IANZ registered Soils Testing Laboratory.

The team has experience in reviewing existing data as well as carrying out site specific investigations to assess stability and suitability for development. Babbage also undertakes due diligence assessments when contamination may be an issue and detailed investigations for remediation.

In 2009 Malcolm became a Fellow of the Institution of Professional Engineers of New Zealand in recognition for his significant contribution to geotechnical and environmental engineering in New Zealand.
