Silverdale Pak N Save Opening March
Another Foodstuff's supermarket nears completion
The new Pak’nSave supermarket at Silverdale is nearing completion and is due to open at the end of March 2012.
Babbage has been extensively involved with the design and construction of the supermarket with input from our Civil, Geotechnical, Environmental, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering teams.
The supermarket is located on one of Foodstuff’s larger sites, which has had some significant environmental and engineering issues to overcome. The ground at the site consists of the unstable Northern Allochthon materials and compressible alluvium soils. This soil is also called the Onerahi Chaos. Potential instability has been addressed by geotechnical analysis and design of twin pole retaining walls supporting the slopes up to the Hibiscus Coast Highway. Some 850, 14m long driven timber piles have been designed and installed to address any foundation settlement of the heavily loaded store. This has allowed the store to open one year earlier than waiting for the settlement to occur.
Some 30,000 cubic metres of topsoil and soil has been moved to form the building and carparking platforms. The nearby Weiti River has been protected from sediment runoff by erosion and sediment control measures designed by Babbage. Our Environmental team has been involved in the design and monitoring of removal and remediation of contaminated material including asbestos from a narrow gully above the river. Stormwater treatment consists of a treatment pond and grass swale designed by our Civil team.
Babbage has worked closely with the Project Manager, Pragmatix, and Fletcher Construction and their subcontractors, including Wharehine Construction, to ensure that the project will be delivered on time and within the project budget.
We are very proud of our on-going relationship with Foodstuffs which started with the design of the refurbishment to the Birkenhead New World 10 years ago and has now included engineering and architectural input into some 50 Pak’nSave, New World, Four Square stores and associated fuel outlets.
