Babbage Entry Refurbishment[227KB]
Our task was to provide a design for a new entry which would be economic and could be built with minimum disruption to the tenant.
The space was to be made welcoming with a more contemporary feel.
In order to keep costs to a minimum, much of the existing stair was retained. The first flight, however, was relocated creating a new central void which the stair wrapped around. The second landing was pulled away from the curtain wall creating more height over the entry and giving a more open feeling to the space. To enhance the openness, the solid balustrades to the landing were replaced with cantilevered glass while the stair balustrades become 'wing' walls, directing you to the street beyond, whilst reinforcing the vertical nature of the space. At the first floor landing the stair is terminated by a floating ceiling, the form of which reflects the wing walls below. The curtain wall was re-glazed with a transparent 'Christaline' glass creating a welcoming focal point that draws you into the building.
The selection of materials was limited to stainless steel, glass and timber which help retain the simplicity of the space and complement the design while the natural tones of the finishes provide a warmth to give the space a welcoming feeling.
