SugarTree, was Auckland’s first major block of apartments to be constructed in the CBD since the Global Financial Crisis made its impact felt and signalled the start of a wider boost in construction across Auckland.
The team of architects lead by Principal Architect, Maria Ouzounova and Project Architect, Caroline Sui have under taken the Developed and Detailed design of all 3 stages of the development.
SugarTree comprises 3 separate apartment blocks on a tight L-shaped site, eased between Nelson and Union streets, on the western side of Auckland’s CBD. This site and the complex footprint of the blocks has created many challenges for our Architects and also our Structural Engineers who have assisted with complex seismic requirements on each of the 3 separate blocks.
From a pre-existing aspirational concept but largely unresolved preliminary design with several buildability issues, our teams have developed an attractive urban enclave that encompasses residential, retail, hospitality and landscaped urban garden community spaces.
This community feel, which the developer (Lily Nelson Limited Partnership) has intended, as a departure from many of the earlier apartment developments in central Auckland, has seen a much larger uptake by owner occupiers rather than solely investment based purchasers.
The stage 1 Prima tower of 1-3 bed apartments was completed at the end of 2014. The stage 2 Centro block is currently under construction with stage 2 Alto currently in design phase and expected to start construction in July of 2016. The entire complex is expected to be completed in 2018.
