Brian Kelly

Senior Piping Designer / Laser Scan Specialist

Brian is one of the few specialists in laser scanning in New Zealand, bringing his expertise from the United States to enhance the Babbage engineering suite of skills. His work is usually done on existing sites where Babbage is designing new features or installations, and produces a three-dimensional image of structures and facilities that are already in place – accurate within 6 millimetres.

He is also a piping system design specialist for industrial sites, mainly dairy processing facilities, where knowledge of a plant’s operation, structural requirements, equipment and layout, industry standards, aesthetics and other elements are essential. He also works in 3D imaging.

Brian earned his trades certificates in civil and municipal drafting and process piping design, and certification in oil and gas process piping design, 3D piping design and laser scanning 3D data capture in Canada between 1994 and 2005.

He has worked in Canada and the United States before coming to New Zealand to join Babbage in 2014.

Key projects include:

  • Pipe bridge design at Fonterra’s Lichfield plant in South Waikato, Westland Dairy’s UHT plant at Rolleston and Oceania’s Glenavy plant south of Timaru
  • Laser scanning at Ravensdown’s plant in Christchurch, Oceania's Glenavy plant and Fonterra’s plant at Takanini
