Gérard Ball

Principal, Manager Building Surveying

Gérard describes himself as the “general practitioner” of building work. His special interest is in what causes problems with a building and what do to about them – how it failed, why it failed, who is responsible and what it will cost to fix. This requires wide knowledge of building practices and the use of materials, including timber decay, problems with concrete and steel, and the use of asbestos.

Gérard joined Babbage in 2015 bringing 30 years’ experience in the construction industry. He trained as a carpenter and joiner in Britain and worked on projects including heritage buildings, schools, hospitals and high-end bespoke fit-outs. He qualified as a clerk of works with the Westminster City Council in London, became a chartered building surveyor while working in France, and is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). After moving to New Zealand in 2008 he qualified as a registered building surveyor.

Gérard does pre-work condition assessments of projects, commercial technical due diligence reporting, quality assurance and cost assessments, landlord-tenant dispute resolution, forward maintenance planning, and provides expert witness services. He is an advocate of the clerk of works and building surveying professions, and is a registered panel assessor for the RICS and a member of the NZIBS executive.

  • A major infrastructure scheme in South Auckland for Fletcher Construction
