Babbage appoints its first Independent non-executive Chairman – Mike Ferrand

Malcom Stapleton has indicated to the Babbage Board that after two terms in the Chairman role the time is right for Babbage to appoint an independent chair of the Board. Accordingly the Board have asked Mike Ferrand to be the first independent non-executive chairman of the Babbage Group. Malcolm noted this is another significant milestone in the evolution of Babbage. This appointment complements the recent decisions the Board has made to strengthen the governance and leadership teams following several years of growth in the Babbage business.

Given the recent arrival of our new CEO Tim Jones the Board has asked that Malcolm to stay as Board chair for an appropriate transition period for Tim to settle into his role. Accordingly Malcolm will remain as chair until 31 December 2018 and Mike Ferrand will assume the role from 1 January 2019. Malcolm will remain on the Board as a director and will work closely with both Mike and Tim to ensure an effective transition into the new roles.  Malcolm will continue to lead the Babbage geotechnical engineering team.

Mike Ferrand is currently Executive Chairman of Greenstone Group and in addition provides leadership support variously as an advisor, director and chair for a range of other companies and organisations. Since joining the Board earlier this year Mike has quickly demonstrated his understanding of the culture of our business and the value he can add to Babbage.

Mike has a track record of challenging boards, management and shareholders to focus on good governance, creating value and ensuring there is a clearly articulated business strategy.

His experience at both governance and management levels will assist him to provide fresh perspectives on opportunities for the business to grow and develop. In his expanded role he will be able to challenge the governance and management teams to meet their stated goals.

When Mike is not supporting businesses he gives his time to the NEXT Foundation as an advisor and is involved in 2 major multiyear investments in Education in their first 1000 days of life.

He spent 6 years as a volunteer lifeline telephone counsellor and trainer.

Mike is happily married to Cindy and is keen to acknowledge his success has stemmed from her support.  Mike and Cindy have a son and a daughter, Christopher and Natalie with 2 grandchildren and another one on the way.

He shares his week between Auckland and Langs Beach, enjoys yoga, mountain biking and spending time with his growing family.
