Babbage puts engineering strength into Foodstuffs’ latest Auckland store.

Massey North, Auckland

The project

This 6000 square metre store sits on a large greenfield site opposite Westgate Shopping Centre and forms part of a new retail precinct.

PAK’nSAVE will strengthen the foothold of brand owner Foodstuffs in Auckland’s northwest, after opening a New World store in Kumeu earlier in 2014.

Our Survey, Civil and Geotechnical Teams have overseen vast earthworks and road developments required to transform relatively untouched land into a serviceable shopping destination.

The store features a large suspended service yard above the carpark which required specialist engineering to ensure it withstands continued use by B-train trucks, which weigh up to 39 tonnes.

Structural engineering was required for a large underground carpark facility for the 30-40,000 shoppers expected to use the store. In theory the basement carpark is a rigid box tied together by the suspended floor diaphragm of the service yard and store.

In lessons learned from performance of long span floor diaphragms during the Christchurch earthquakes, additional engineering has added cross braces near the mid-span of the floor. This provides a multi-load, path-resilient, lateral-resisting system design.

Customers and store owners benefit from installation of LED lighting in retail areas which will provide brighter store lighting as well as cost and energy efficiencies designed by our Building Services Engineers.

Weather-tightness of the yard slab has been achieved by a special slab design with concrete admixture rather than applying a waterproofing membrane post-construction.

To control concrete shrinkage cracks, attention has been paid to design details of the suspended floor and layout of saw cuts and control joints.

Complex jointing geometry between the entry box and main retail warehouse area incorporates a hidden internal gutter to optimise the visual aspect of the building.
